Confirmed cases of COVID-19 now number more than 1.7 million around the world as of April 11, 2020, including more than 502,000 cases in the United States alone. The United States now leads the world in cases. Once referred to as novel coronavirus, COVID-19 has disrupted lives across the globe, with new cases and deaths occurring every day.The U.S. has now at least 18,703 deaths from the novel coronavirus as the pandemic continues to spread across the country.Here’s an update on the latest news about the coronavirus, including confirmed cases and deaths. The first section of this article will have the most recent news updates. The next two sections have maps and statistics on confirmed cases and deaths around the world. This article is being updated every day.April 11 UpdatesGov. Cuomo ‘Cautiously Optimistic’ that Infection Rate SlowingGov. Cuomo said he’s “cautiously optimistic” that the infection rate in New York may be slowing, but the state is still losing a “tremendous” number of lives, CNN reported. A chance in ICU admissions was in the negative range on April 10, and President Donald Trump said that number of hospital beds being used in the state was “substantially reduced.”Dr. Anthony Fauci, meanwhile, warned that the U.S. shouldn’t be pulling back from social distancing yet, CNN reported. He said: “This is the end of the week — that famous week that we spoke about last weekend. It’s important to remember that this is not the time to feel that since we have made such important advance in the sense of success of the mitigation that we need to be pulling back at all.”Dr. Deborah Birx said the U.S. hasn’t reached the peak of infections yet.Boris Johnson Is Walking AgainPrime Minister Boris Johnson was released from intensive care (although he is still hospitalized) and is now walking again a little, Sky News reported. A statement about his condition reads: “The prime minister has been able to do short walks, between periods of rest, as part of the care he is receiving to aid his recovery.” It’s not yet known how long he will need to stay in the hospital.Increase in Cardiac Arrests Reported in New YorkThere has been a 400% increase in cardiac arrest deaths in homes in the last month in New York City, NBC New York reported. Bill Gates will be funding factories that will test seven vaccine candidates to help mobilize vaccines faster, Business Insider reported in early April. He’s building manufacturing capacity for the seven top vaccines to accelerate the process. He said: “Even though we’ll end up picking at most two of them, we’re going to fund factories for all seven, just so that we don’t waste time in serially saying, ‘OK, which vaccine works?’ and then building the factory.”A second potential COVID-19 vaccine is entering Phase 1 clinical human trials, TechCrunch reported in early April. This one is from Inovio and is the INO-4800 DNA vaccine. Inovio completed Phase 1 trial for a similar DNA vaccine for MERS. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is backing this trial.WHO says at least 20 vaccines are in development right now, CNBC reported on March 20. Scientists still say it might be 18 months for some. Some vaccine trials are moving faster thanks to genetic sequencing of COVID-19 from China and other countries.On March 30, Johnson & Johnson announced that it will start human clinical trials for a vaccine in September, with the first round not being available until early 2021.A clinical vaccine trial funded by NIH at Kaiser Permanente in Washington began on Monday, March 16. Forty-five people are participating and will receive two doses over a month’s time. Still, officials say this vaccine wouldn’t be widely available for 12-18 months, even if tests go well. The vaccine candidate code is mRNA-1273. Jennifer Haller was the first to try the new vaccine. You can read more about her in Heavy’s story here.Seattle researchers are recruiting volunteers for a clinical vaccine trial by Moderna, CBS Detroit reported on March 10. The trial launches at the end of April and will last for 14 months but does not require quarantine. Volunteers will receive $1,100.Israeli scientists have said they may be close to a vaccine, The Jerusalem Post reported. Scientists have been working on a vaccine against a bronchial disease that affected poultry. Dr. Chen Katz told The Jerusalem Post that out of luck, they had chosen a coronavirus as the proof of concept for their technology, and the DNA of COVID-19 is very similar.Greffex in Houston has a potential vaccine ready for animal testing. Inovio plans human trials on a coronavirus vaccine in April and might be able to deliver a million doses by the end of the year if the trial’s successful, Yahoo! reported. Walter Reed and the U.S. Army have been conducting animal studies since January.COVID-19 Now Has More than 1.4 Million Confirmed Cases & More than 82,000 Deaths WorldwideAs of early April 11, 1.441 million people have been confirmed to have COVID-19, according to BNO.
